The Critter Corner
Welcome to our personal zoo. Hope you like animals, because we sure do.
We've had to give up our pets due to various reasons including some
pregnancy complications, but we still love them and keep in touch with
those that have adopted them. Each section also includes links to sights
with more information on that animal.
Ferrets:
Our six ferret babies -- Taz, Coffee, Daphne, Tia, Gretchen, and Beelzebub
-- were adopted by a wonderful woman named Lynda Reid, in Kansas. They
are happy and healthy as ever, and no doubt keeping her on her toes. All
but Coffee are rescues animals -- either coming from Ferrets, Etc in
Denver, Colorado, or from the pet store where I used to work (we took in
animal that the owners didn't want to keep anymore).

Ferret
Central
- If you need to know it about a ferret, you'll find it here. FAQs on
care, medical problems, how to deal with biters, etc. Lists of shelter
operators and veternarians that are familar with ferrets. Basically the
ferret-owner's jackpot of information.
Dogs:
Eddie, our Australian Shephard/English Pointer mix who came from the
Denver Dumb Friends league, is living with Kirk's parents currently, and
it looks like they're going to keep him permanently. He's had a few
dominance clashes with their dogs, but is settling in OK. Shadow, the
blue merle Australian Shephard puppy we had to sell, but he went to a
family with three acres of land and two other dogs, plus children to keep
him company and seems to be doing quite well.

rec.pets.dogs:
Informational Dog-Related Web Sites
-
Probably the most comprehensive list of dog care and breed FAQs you might
find. The first is a list of FAQs usually posted to rec.pets.dogs, the
second a list of information websites also posted there. You'll find more
practical care stuff in the first list, more breed specific sites in the
second.
-
Austrialian Shepherd HomePage
- All about the Aussies, the history, show standards, what kind of dogs
they are, etc. Good way to decide if they are the dog for you.
- American Pointer Club,
Inc.
- Some information on Pointers and this AKC sanctioned club dedicated to
them.
- Denver Dumb Friends League
- If you're planning on getting a new pet, consider adopting a homeless
animal. These are often great pets, and definately need love and care.
If you're in the Denver area, the Denver Dumb Friends League is a great
place to go to find a pet.
Gerbils and Rats:
Kirk and I have enjoyed keeping both rats and gerbils, and recommend both
as first pets, especially for children. All of our rats have now passed
on, and we have stopped breeding gerbils do to lack of time (human
children can do that to you), but still recommend them highly. I find
these links the most useful, but more gerbil links can be found on this
Gerbil Webring.

Gerbil FAQ
- All about the care, keeping, and breeding of gerbils with a very basic
overview of gerbil coat color genetics. Written by your's truly, Michelle
Haines.
-
The Gerbil
Club of Missouri
- The only gerbil organizatin in the United States, that I know of
anyway. It says Missouri, but they allow anyone in the US to be a member.
Maybe one of these days we'll rename it the American Gerbil Society.
:)
- The National Gerbil
Society
- A British gerbil society. This page has lots of great links and
information, including a second home of the Gerbil FAQ. Some of those
links are also here.
- The Rat and Mouse Club of
America
- An organization dedicated to the care and breeding of rats and mice.
Good information and suggestions for stuff like safe cages.
- RMCA FAQs
Page
- The Rat and Mouse Club of America FAQs page, with a nice list of
various rodent FAQs. Handy thing to have if you're searching for
information on these critters.
Birds:
Our four birds, two cockatiels and two budgies, have moved to the
University of Wyoming Learning Resource Center. It's essentially a
children's library. The kids learn a lot about the care of birds, and the
adults around make sure the kids learn to treat the birds with respect.
Spice and Snow are a mated pair of 'tiels; a cinnamon male and a
white-face female respectively. They do lay eggs occasionally. Sky and
Cindy are the budgies; a pied cobolt male and a double-yellow factor
Harlequin female.
The American Cockatiel Society
The National Cockatiel
Society
- Both of these are national organizations dedicated to the domestically
kept Australian Cockatiels. Information, FAQs, and links.
-
The American Budgerigar
Society
- A national society dedicated to the domestically kept Australian
Budgerigar. Information, FAQs, and links.
-
Me & My Budgie
- A good source of FAQs on the budgies written primarily for the
beginning bird keeper. Very nicely done.
